Social Media Guidelines

Social Media Guidelines

A few random guidelines (in no particular order) on the “voice” to use for Volkis social media and what we’re trying to achieve:

  • Use a casual tone rather than corporate one. Write as though you’re speaking to someone face-to-face
  • Respect the audience’s time
  • No post is better than an “okay” post
  • Australian & New Zealand audience focus… (so, for example, mentioning hot weather in January makes sense. American holidays don’t make sense)
  • Avoid pushing a political or religious agenda onto others
  • Our focus is technical, offensive security
  • Speak from an attacker’s mindset / attacker’s perspective
  • Use the word “hacker”! It’s not a slur. But avoid the term “ethical hacker”
  • Pointed educational content is great
  • Hacking stories are great
  • Maintain empathy, security is hard (e.g. Humans are NOT the weakest link in security)

The culture of Volkis and who we are (this will move to it’s own page soon):

  • “Hacker culture”
    • Question the status quo
    • Rebellious
    • Creative
    • Call out bullshit
    • Welcoming (not gate keeping)
    • “Check your ego”
  • Safe to be yourself - free to express yourself
  • Casual, not corporate
  • Technical offensive security focus at heart
  • Always learning, always teaching
  • Empathy for each other and clients
  • Do cool shit together
  • Look after each other
  • Not take ourselves too seriously, but be proud of work we do
  • Safe to make mistakes
  • We do not project political opinions or religious values onto others

The voice and content used should match the above.
